Abstract

|
Since the report of Mixter and Barr in 1934, herniation of the nucleus pulposus has became a well-known entity as a cause for low back pain and sciatica, and is generally regarded as the most frequent lesion producing these symptoms.
Spurling and Grantham (1949), O¢¥Connell (1951), Burns and Young (1951) and Gurdjian (1961) reported the results of the surgical treatment of herniated intervertebral disc but the results were variable from 46% to 83% that complete disappearance of lumbago after surgery.
The purpose of this report is to compare the surgical treatment to conservative treatment in 100 patients who admitted to Seoul National University Hospital from 1973 to 1977.
